How to Choose a Pool Cover

Updated: May 10, 2021

Fall is here in Charlotte and that means that winter is right around the corner. Owning a swimming pool requires taking the necessary steps to protect your investment. A swimming pool cover will ensure that your backyard oasis is safe during the cold months. In addition to keeping your in-ground pool safe from damage, a swimming pool cover will help keep every member of your family safe from harm.

So, what type of pool cover should you choose? There are many types of swimming pool covers to choose from, each with it's own unique purpose.

  • A solar cover is used to capture heat from the sun to keep your pool's temperature several degrees higher than what it might be without the cover. They last up to 3 years and cost between $75 and $225.

  • A standard winter cover tarp is used to keep out sunlight and light debris. They last 1-3 seasons and costs between $75 and $225.

  • A mesh security cover (leaf net) keeps out debris, but does not keep out water. They last between 10 and 15 years and cost between $1,200 and $3,000.

  • A solid vinyl cover keeps out debris and water. They last between 6 and 10 years and cost between $1,200 and $3,000.

  • A safety cover or security cover is either woven mesh or solid vinyl and is secured to your pool’s deck with straps to anchors around the entire perimeter of your pool. They last between 6 and 10 years and cost between $1,200 and $3,600.

  • An automatic cover provides constant protection and heats the water significantly. They last about 3 years before repairs are needed and they cost between $5,000 and $15,000.

With pros and cons for each type of swimming pool cover, you’ll need to decide which positives outweigh the negatives to choose the right one for you. Regardless of your cover choice, a well-maintained pool is essential for a well-enjoyed pool.
